Solomons to Charleston

There are a lot of considerations that are involved.

Preferred routing, weather, time of year to name a few.

@Icurusty In all seriousness, you possibly could make Coinjock in on day. It’s 115 miles to Tidewater Marina in Portsmouth, VA and then another 50 miles to Coinjock, NC. Now, assuming you don’t have to stop for fuel, that’s 5 hours to Tidewater. Make it 6 hours for planning purposes. Then you have one lock and 3 or 4 (can’t remember the exact number) draw bridges to get through. If your timing is wrong, you lose a half hour at the lock. Plan on 4 hours to Coinjock. Preorder the Prime Rib when you make your slip reservations. They have fuel there. So your first day, you easily were at the helm for 10 hours. That’s a long time.

Day 2: Coinjock to Moorhead City. 150 miles. Albemarle Sound which can flare up at the drop of a hat. Draw bridges. Just under 7 hours at 20 it’s. Plan for 9 hours. Another exhausting day.

Day 3: Moorhead City to North Myrtle Beach. About 140 miles. No knowledge of No Wake Zones, bridges, etc. That’s 6 hours of running at speed. Plan for 9 hours. Another long day.

Day 4: North Myrtle Beach to Charleston. 120 miles plus a bit to get up into Charleston proper. Tides and currents down there are crazy. Do you have to traverse certain areas on high tides only? That adds time to the trip. About 5.5 hrs run time. Plan for 7+

Granted, this is the 30,000 foot elevation planning model. And I’ve only been as far as Coinjock. But to answer your original question about making it in 3 days, my answer is NO. Take 5 days.

What is the status of the Great Bridge Bridge and Lock? Seems like I remember reading that it was closed a majority of the time for repairs. Waterway guide has referenced the backup of traffic trying to get through.

We did the opposite trip from Charleston to the C&D Canal in 2-1/2 days back in April but were running 27-28 knots so I'd say more like 4 days. Our first day was in the ocean from Charleston to Beaufort, NC and stopped at Oriental. Then Oriental to Tidewater the second day and home by 1:00 the third day. We got lucky with the Great Bridge lock as they had just started the limited schedule and I do believe it will be closed during the week most of this month.
