SR Cust Serv and HIN numbers

My boat no longer has a HIN number stamped in the gel coat on the stbd stern corner. The PO, employing the "dock by feel method", did some damage to that section of boat that required glass work and new gel coat over that section. I have the HIN # from registration docs and original paperwork from the boat (it was a 1 owner boat before me).

After reading the other HIN post this morning, I called SR Cust Srvc to ask about other locations where the HIN might be stamped. He wouldn't tell me. He said they keep those additional locations secret in case there is a question from authorities about theft of the vessel. Interesting, I thought. But I was worried that my boat having no visable HIN would be a red flag to any potential buyer when I decide to sell. The SR rep assured me that any potential buyers could call SR and they would cross check the HIN on the registration with engine serial numbers, AC serial numbers, etc, to ensure that the HIN I have is actually representative of the boat I'm selling.

Just thought I'd share.

PS - do you think it would be beneficial to get a HIN plate (like I've seen on Cruisers Yachts) and place that in the location of where the original HIN was stamped?

I would do that, and I'd make sure it was in a location that would avoid future damage and also could not be easily removed. The more real it looks the easier it is going to be re-registered when a future buyer tries to register it out of state.

Yeah, I think I'll do that. Although, I had no issues registering it in CT and it was previously registered in NY.
