So As I head back the 10 miles or so on the port engine, should starboard be in neutral or forward?
 
Depends on the transmission... My Hurth HSW manual advised the shaft be locked...no rotation. Secure with a piece of rope.

FWD/REV/N wont matter in most marine transmissions, the clutch pack is hydraulically actuated and only operate when the engine is running/turning.
 
Automotive transmissions don’t like to be towed with the drive wheels spinning, as the output portion of the transmission is being spun by the driveshaft.

The input side doesn’t rotate.
The pump is driven by the input shaft.
Therefore, there’s no ATF being pumped through the system. The bushings and needle bearing can be damaged.

On a marine transmission, locking the prop shaft makes sense, as it prevents this scenario.
 
Do you know your engine issue?
Ended up being a bad ignition module. I knew the best practice was to tie the prop, but it just wasn’t safe with water conditions. I also know shaft seal cooling is a concern, but ironically I just had new seals put on a week ago and they installed the new style with the crossover.

On another note, I wasn’t able to locate an OEM ignition module locally, so I bought an automotive module as I wanted to make sure that was the issue so I could start working a repair plan before the holiday. It fired right up with the new module, so I ordered a marine module online and it should arrive this week. My question is, would it be unsafe to run with the automotive module for a couple of days until I can get the marine module? Since it is located inside the distributor cap and only has the 2 connections that come out, I assumed it may be more a durability issue than being unprotected circuit. Would that be a fair statement or would using the automotive module temporarily a huge safety issue?
 
Do you have the part number of the module you purchased
Considering there are no moving parts in the module I`s say your ok to use it and save some money.
