I recently had to bang on the starter to turn the engine over. Since I have to bang on the starter to make it turn the engine actually mean the starter needs to be replaced or not? I would like to save some money. Anyone able to help.

Do you hear any noises when you turn the key (prior to banging on the starter)? You may have a problem with the solenoid mounted on the starter. You can check the connectors to see if they need cleaning. The starter itself may also have corrosion in it which is preventing the motor from turning or the gear from engaging to the flywheel. I see you are in NC - do you boat in saltwater? The starter is fairly easy to replace if necessary - some shops will rebuild the starter or the solenoid after testing if you want to save some money.

I recently had a problem with my starboard starter. It would spin but not engage with the flywheeel. It seems it was a bendix problem that could have been handled with a rebuild....I decided to replace both with new Arco starters. I don't want to be stranded on the water or forced to come into the dock with only 1 engine.

The starters are fairly reasonable if you do a seach. Rebuilt starter for your boat should be about $125 or so and easy to replace...good insurance.

I use the boat in the intercoastal. I here a click noise when I turn the key and that's it. I have checked the battery on a load tester and the battery didn't drop lower than 12 volts. I've cleaned most of the connections, but wanted to check with everyone to see if it is actually the starter since I bang on it for it to start.

The clicking noise - can you tell where it is coming from? You can then narrow it down to either the slave solenoid or the starter itself (solenoid or motor). Since you can hit the starter and it works then I'd remove it and have it tested.

It sounds like it is coming from the starter. We are going to take it off tomorrow and see rather it is the slave or actual starter and let you all know.
