I have had my 180 sport in the shop pretty much the whole season this year. I took it to one marine shop and they charged me $900 to pull my motor to extract a starter bolt stud out of the block(4weeks). 10hours later it broke again. I have been told several times that I am missing the starter bracket. Now I moved my boat to backyard marine machanic one of my buddy's refered me too by our lake. Now they have had it for (3weeks) and still waiting to hear back from them.
Does anyone know anything about this?
Will the bracket be the answer to my issue?
Should I replace it with a lighter aftermarket starter or just keep the oem starter with a bracket added?
Any help is greatly appreciated!!!:smt100

I replaced the starter on my 210 Sundeck several weeks ago. Like yours it is placed behind the engine by the transom and very difficult to get to or like yours impossible with out pulling the engine. Two of the starter bolts were bent and had to be replaced. Like I said in my first thread, you would think Sea Ray would have a better idea!:smt021 Because it is so difficult you will find mechanics are reluctant to work on the starter.
Good Luck!!

Sea Ray (or Mercury Marine) has since changed the location on the starter motors from the bottom to the top of the engines - at least on the 8.1Ltr Horizon models.

Sometimes they do listen!:wow:

wow....this is exactly what my marine mechanic had to put on my searay to correct my problem. I ran it for a good 10hours this weekend and it never broke a start bolt. The "Bracket" is the FIX!!!

I can't believe I had this issue in my 2005 180 sport. I guess the previous owner had the starter replaced and the mechanic forgot to put the bracket back on. I broke the start bolts 2 times over running for approx. 10 hours. So 3 trips to 2 different mechanics finally the last mechanic knew what he was doing.
