The cockpit and bridge speakers on my boat stereo occasionally "pop" for no reason I can explain. It's the type of scratchy/crackly/popping sound I would expect to hear if there were a bad ground connection, but the ground connection is solid. I also checked the fuses and wiring connections on that amplifier, they are fine too. These speakers are powered by a separate amp which is why I am focusing on that amp, the inside speakers are fine.

Any bright ideas?

Check the connection of the amp turn on from the stereo - it sounds as though the popping may be a similar sound as when an amp turns on. It may be loose and power cycling the amp. That wire is typically blue. On the amp you will have power, ground and the 12v turn on wire.

I had the same problem in my vehicle once, that fixed it.

Thanks Travis. I will try that.

Also try running a double ground. Amps can be finicky. I've had the same issue before and everytime it was either a power or ground issue.

To bring closure: I just replaced the cheesed!ck no-name chinese amplifier with an Alpine. Nothing special, 4x75 with bridging for the subwoofer, but I can happily report that the problem is solved. I'm back to being "that obnoxious power-boater" in an otherwise tranquil sailboat marina.

Sailboat... tranquil? When my powerboat is in the marina, it doesn't make any noise. The snailboats, on the other hand, constantly clang when their lines slap against the big pole when the wind blows. Can a chainsaw cut aluminum?

Only once before you need a new chain.
