I have a 2000 340 sundancer, my stereo comes on and off when it wants. I want to replace the whole system and put the highest quality speakers, radio , and amp available. Does anyone know what sizes, types, or brands i should aim for ? thanks

This is one probably best to use the search function for and read all the different installations that have been done by members here and their reasons. That said, from my short few months on this forum, the products from JL Audio seem to have a lot of momentum right now with this group.

+1 on the search function. That being said probably the 2 best guys to respond on this are Hifi & David from Earmark Marine. They are extremely knowledgable and helpful with these type of questions.
I personally picked up a Clarion M309 to install because I want to have a dedicated usb plug for an iPod/iPhone. I also required rca inputs to run my Satellite into for the music stations & when watching a movie on HBO or something. I am also going to try and run inputs from a BluRay player into it. I bought several JL Audio amps also due to all of the positive reviews that they received here.
Hifi and David made some good points about D Class amps VS AB Class amps as far as performance VS energy consumption but, I don't think that you want to drag up that arguement again! It was like East Coast VS West Coast rapper battles! LOL
As far as head units go that one will probably come down to your needs and personal preference. I have heard people use Clarion, Sony, JVC and others. David recommended an Alpine System that sounded real sweet but was out of my budget. It used RF remotes that eliminated the need to run new wires to the helm but, convienence comes at a price!
Speakers are also another varied opinion product. I am adding JL Audio 6.5" rounds and a 10" infinite baffle sub in my cockpit. I may cheap out on the cabin speakers for now and upgrade them later after I blow out the cheap ones!!! LOL I have heard good things about the Polk Audio speakers and I believe Sferguson has them in his 340 DA.

Good luck with whatever you choose!!

I have to agree with above posts. It is all in what you want. Myself, I run Apline head unit and RF remote. Polk Audio compoenents and Phoenix Gold subs three amps and it got a great workout this past saturday. 2200 watts, a good solid 8 hrs of 3/4 volume with no issues what so ever. Best money and time I have ever spent on my boat. Instalation was not as hard as I thought it would be either.
