New member who has recently purchased a 2003 Sea Ray 270 Sundeck. Also the first time I have ever used a forum discussion site:thumbsup::thumbsup:, so go easy on me. I am looking at updating my current sound system. Installed system is a Clarion (Model XMD1) AM/FM/CD Player along with 6 speakers (4 in the cockpit and 2 in the bow). At the helm, I have a Digital Display Remote Control. I believe that I also have a Power Amplifier made by Marine Audio (model MAA120-2) that is installed. I do not know this for certain because I searched the boat over and was unable to locate the amplifier, however, I do have the owners manual for this Amp that was with the other boat manuals.
My goal when I am all done is to have a reliable, great sounding and flexible system that I can attach either an I-Pod or a Serius receiver to. The issues I have with Player is that it sometimes skips and is not I-Pod compatible. I hope to keep the Remote Control and Speakers as part of the new system. For compatability issues, I am looking at a new Clarion XMD3 ($160) or a CMD4 ($200). Of course, I have also looked at a new Amp (APX490M-$195 or APX290M-$125) and possibly a Subwoofer. I am a real novice when it comes to this – what should I be aware of and am I heading in the right direction??

Not exactly what you are looking for but I thought it may help give you an idea, this was my audio upgrade. Good luck with your upgrade. Welcome to the site and make sure to put your boat information (year, model, motor, etc) in your signature. Again welcome to the club.

Also when you decide which way you are going, check with the host of our club (www.boemarine.com) as he could have saved me alot of change had I went through him on my equipment.

I intalled a Fusion system which takes an iPod into the unit like a cassette and allows up to three daisy chained remotes, four independently controlled speaker zones and a satellite radio hookup.

Face it, CD's and tapes have no real place on a boat. The Fusion unit is well gasketed and takes the space of a single slot car radio. The face looks large, but that's only the face.
