Stupid Questions, Chapter II

More ice vs potential water damage ... to each his own.

That's what I alwaays say sometimes. :smt043

It's a judgment call... If it's the middle of summer and I know I'm going to be out on the boat a lot using ice... I usually leave the water on. Today the only thing turned on are the heaters, battery charger and the bilge pumps.....:wow:

Here is an excerpt from a checklist I have handy on board to remind the Admiral (or me) of procedures for leaving the boat. Perhaps it will help you to format your own list.

Leaving for a day or more:
Turn off water supply hose at dock and transom locker
Adjust air conditioning to 78-80 degrees (or turn off if cooler outside)
Turn off hot water heater
Turn off fresh water pump
Turn off main and guest heads
Turn off satellite TV switches
Turn off Direct TV box
Shut hatches/windows/windshield vent
Secure cockpit canvas
Lock salon

Sadly, I agree. The bad part is that I have been through every single page of the two feet of manuals that came with the boat...and all the various systems. Some of it stuck (I knew what the pigtail was if the batteries died so I could get in the hatch). Some of it didn't...(what the hell is the battery charger and why is there a red light on it). I also have very little luck using the search feature, because I usually don't know what the part is called, but I will keep plugging away. Merry Christmas and thanks to all for their input.

Jedi,
I was just poking a little fun at you since what one absorbs when going through such a volume of information is many times dependent on prior experience and knowledge. In my case, the battery charger was the second manual I read after the Sea Ray owners manual because my first boat didn't have one. As a result, I was stranded in the slip one Sunday because the boat wouldn't start so no boating for that weekend. If the boat had a charger or I had a booster pack, the memory wouldn't have been so vividly etched in my head. On the other hand I didn't recognize the vaccum pump for the head since we never used the head on my previous boat and intend to use it as little as possible on this one. Different strokes for different folks!

Another suggestion that has helped me is take a high quality digital photo of your engine compartment and then compare it to the the bilge layout diagram in your owner's manual so you can learn the physical location of the various components.
