Stupid tranny question

This may be a very stupid question, but does the tranny fluid flow through the cooler when the engine is running, even when not in gear? I just replaced the cooler and changed fluid twice. I am going to run it before draining the fluid again, but wondering if I can run it at the dock or if I have to be in gear. Thank you!

It does on my ZF V drives. You didn't say what drives you had, but I imagine they are ZF drives.
