Large block or small, and A, B, BII, BIII, and maybe some older ones. A good fit is either a high-tech small block or a basic model large block and any stern drive, but a BIII is recommended for larger motors so you don't spin your wheels. Are you sure you want to put that kind of money into that kind of boat in this buyer's market?

What was or is in there now? If it's an OMC you may be better off going with a Volvo package.
My brother's '87 Seville(19') has an older Merc OD pre-Alpha, but I'm not sure on the bigger models if they had an OMC offering then.

The common engines were either a 350 or a 454 mated to an Alpha I. Anything else will probably require a big make over in the transom to handle the changes. Stock would be easier!

Isn't the Alpha a bit marginal with a big block on that size boat?

I was thinking about doing a 350Mag Bravo III swap on my boat when it comes time to re-power. Probably overkill...

The Alpha is fine on the 250 and barely adequate on the 268. There were a lot of those 268's made with the 454 and some are still out there today. I wouldn't recommend firewalling the throttles with them however! Our 250 DA still had the original drive and no problems after 20 years.
