I don't know where your drawing the line on huge salaries but half the players in the NFL are making at least $1mil. While it's true the base wage for some rooky in 2009 is only $310,000 and that is small in comparison to the top salary, I would hardly call it modest. There are alot of people that make their living doing far harder and riskier work for just a fraction of that.

A good friend and ex neighboor's brother (Chad Clifton)was a top Tackle at UT and was drafted by Green Bay. I was a little amazed at both the millions in salary and another million in signing bonus this kid made. I was not amazed at how trashed this young man is now that he is in the big leagues. always in the hosiptal for something. Not sure what price you can put on this kind of abuse.

I don't think Football, hockey, rodeo, NASCAR, Boxing, SuperCross....what am I missing? will go anywhere.
Actually people/players get hurt, paralyzed and even killed each year.
Heat stroke, head injury, asthma claim many each year and it hasn't killed any of these sports, just a few participants.
Yes, the lawyers may have more evidence to go after some of the billions of dollars invested and spent on these sports but.....NONE will go away.
We have safer equipment and improving technologies and for years have been coached better to avoid severe injuries.

The fact is, since Roman times we've been medling in sports and competitions that have entertained the masses and sacrifice the risk seekers of fame, riches and glory. We love our heros.
