The future of EVs? Maybe not so bad?

I doubt many participants on this forum wring their hands about anthropological global warming

I loved it about 5 years ago when I invited my hippie daughter and her hippie husband to the boat for a day - she told me he is "gluten intolerant" - I told her "bring what ever beer he can drink". She brought nothing, and he drank all my "regular' beers - priceless. When I went to start both engines, I said to him "let's warm the globe 16 cylinders at a time". He looked at me and said "if you are going to talk that way, I'm going to leave". I told him "we are going to miss you".

He stayed for the 6 hour boat ride and my "regular" beers!! LOL, f**kin millennial hippies!!!

So typical…

Nothing better than burning up dinosaurs. :)

It’s still fake. I mean the invoice is real, but The dealership was tacking on more than 300% profit to the cost of the battery.

I know snopes is a political no-no, but this write-up agrees with everything that is being stated by volt owners, and is a good summary. https://www.snopes.com/fact-check/chevy-volt-battery-invoice/

if an honest dealer looks up a volt battery, they will find this:
https://www.gmpartsonline.net/oem-parts/gm-battery-assembly-20979876

this dealer was just taking this guy for a ride.
You are the one taking us for a ride with your bullshit website. Trust pilot has them rated at a paltry 1.7 out of 5 and a 94% poor or bad rating.

This review sums this up.

“site list parts. lets you complete checkout. takes your money. then emails you to let you know parts are discontinued.”

That's strange, because I use them for parts for my Colorado, and also for when I swapped a LS1 into my Nissan. They were a great source of parts for me. It sucks if they have gone downhill. *EDIT: Turns out trustpilot might be a scam, and you can't turst everything you find on the internet.

Mike,

You might want to check your use of trustpilot.

They rate amazon.com the same as the gm website.
https://www.trustpilot.com/review/www.amazon.com

and they give lowes.com an even worse review:
https://www.trustpilot.com/review/www.lowes.com

They also give midwayusa.com a poor rating.

Just about every website that I order from has a poor rating with them.

They seem sketchy to me.

Also check this rating of trustpilot, and the BBB has complaints of them, claiming there are millions of fake reviews and the site installs malicious firmware.

I think this kinda says it all. This is a legit video, don't be afraid to click.

Reminds me of the time....a couple guys I knew with more cultured/refined tastes in beer came knocking on the side of the boat about 1am. They had told me more than once through the years that they could never drink the 'shit beer' that I drank, I usually drink Bud Light.

They were standing on the dock aside my boat, told me they ran out of beer and asked if I had any, I told them no. They asked what I was drinking then and I told them 'just shit beer, nothing you'd want' and let them stand there. I made them beg, they said whatever I had would be OK:D:p

More than 16, you need to count the genny cylinders too!!!!

So one thing that puzzles me, a lithium battery must be shipped in a special container and treated as hazardous material, wether new or to recycling. Are the cars themselves the equivalent of a hazardous material container or is this just another contradiction?

I have read it costs $7000 to recycle a single Tesla battery. Yes, I know Tesla included that in the price of the car but you are still paying for it…

What does GM do? Is recycling the old battery built into the estimate? I would expect so, heck even tires have a recycling charge built in…

I know the article you got that from. What isn't clear is what they mean by "recycle". Are they breaking it down to the base materials and constructing an entirely new cell, or does this mean putting new cells into an existing battery pack?

I don't know how they define recycle here. Although, I think it means to break down to raw materials and start over.

Either way, how does that compare to the cost of a new battery? And is the quality/specs the same?

The dead battery must be disposed of in some way and there will be a cost...

I used to work in a steel mill that evolved into recycling batteries for the metallic content. They were primarily NiCad batteries but many others too. We would get the batteries in and there was a team of 2 guys per shift that would cut the tops off on a band saw then separate the nickel plates from the cadmium plates by hand and put them into separate containers. The nickel plates would go directly into our shredder to be chewed up and sent to our smelting furnace where we would make stainless steel ingots then sell them back to our customers. At that time our customers were not battery producers, but other steel mills. Let's say a mill took a sample of their metal and found the nickel content was down then they would dump a few tons of our ingots in to get the nickel content back up. That may have changed since I left there in 2005 but I do know the cadmium plates had to go into a vat of water as they would heat up and smoke and that gas was very bad to breath in. We initially paid to have those shipped to another company and not sure what they did with them but we eventually built a cadmium furnace. IIRC it was the first in north america but it was also not profitable on it's own. We lost money on smelting the cadmium but we knew that going in. What we made off of the nickel made it worthwhile.
