Thru Hull Speed Wheel

Does anyone know how to check the thru hull speed wheel?
My Tri data shows no speed when moving. It spins free, I just check while winterizing. I think I remember someone mentioning check resistance while spinning the wheel.

You can check the instrument display by disconnecting the signal wire from the speed transducer and tapping it against a ground. The instrument should show a speed depending on how fast you tap it. The result will tell you if it is the transducer or the instrument display that is the problem.
