I have a 2008 195 sport. Has anyone mounted a thru the hull transducer? I am planning purchasing a Lowrance Elite 5 or Hummingbird. I would love to put a thru the hull transducer in the engine compartment but not sure how close to the factory one i can get. I heard Sea Ray may have a designated area for a second transducer. Not to crazy about drilling for the transom mount.

I too just got a Lawrence depth/fish finder.I would rather do in in hull mount instead of drilling as well.

Just had new electronics installed. I decided to put a shoot-thru hull transducer in for now until I get the boat hauled out in the fall for bottom paint and some other stuff.
The installer made it look really easy: He sanded the area and cleaned it good, built a dam with a paint stick in the forward bilge, and poured some 5 minute epoxy in, set the transducer in it and leveled it up. He sat there and held it for a couple minutes until it was set and it was done..... works great too.

I put a picture of it here: http://clubsearay.com/forum/showpost.php?p=452966&postcount=40

I have heard that a through hull transducer does not work as well as one that is mounted outside. Is that true?? I was at west marine and the guy there said that he would never have one that wasn't mounted outside of the boat. I am thinking about getting a depth finder and would rather have the through hull as well.. Any thoughts??

As I understand it, you will receive optimal performance from an external transducer however if you get the mounting location right, a good in-hull ducer should work fine. I have yet to install it, but I just got an adjustable P79 transducer. It can be adjusted for deadrise so you dont have to do a build up of epoxy or make changes to mount it. Just adjust to the deadrise and mount. The link posted is for the Lowrance model.

I have heard the same thing and it makes sense. A shoot-thru hull transducer is not going to be as sensitive or accurate as a through hull transducer. I think it depends on what you want from your depth sounder. If your really into fishing and want clear bottom images and water temps, through hull is the only way to go. But, if your just trying to find out how deep the water is, why drill a hole in your boat? The shoot-thru transducers work great.
I am planning on putting a through hull transducer in my boat this fall when it gets hauled out for bottom paint and a new swim step. I'm only doing that because the holes are there already. If I didn't already have two through hull fittings in the bottom of my boat (from the original depth sounders) I wouldn't even consider drilling a hole in my boat to install a through hull.

Jason, I tried to get one of those adjustable transducers but they seem to be back ordered all across the country (at least thats what West Marine told me). Let us know how the install goes.

Could be. I got mine from BOE Marine www.boemarine.com about a month ago and had it in just a couple days. I have not tried it out yet but plan to try a few spots in the bilge this weekend to see how it works before mounting it.

I am sure it won't give the same strength as a Thru-Hull ducer but I think with the limited amount of fishing I do, it will work fine for me. With 5 thru-hulls and another thru-hull Smartcraft ducer, I think I have enough holes already.

Have not seen you around here in a while Pack, glad to see you back.
