I am being told i may have a bad cylinder by the mechanic. If so how long roughly should it take to repair? They have a travel life at my marina. I assume the motor has to be pulled out. 2008 sundancer 330. twin 8.1 /496 inboards. I just want to get some idea of what i may be up against/ get other opinions ...thanks

I'm assuming your mechanic did a compression test to figure this out. What did the numbers say? If he didn't ....find another mechanic. Also, how many hours are on the engines?

"you MAY HAVE" I would like to hear a "definitely have " before pulling a motor
You could have a cam with a wiped out lobe also

Ok.....thanks for the background. You have to pull the codes and do a compression check to see what is going on. Pulling the engine on your boat is not a trivial matter and I would definitely figure out what is wrong with it first. It isn't difficult but it would take 2-3 hours of diagnostic work to sort it out.

This is the Mercruiser Table with Faults: http://cd8ba0b44a15c10065fd-24461f3....vanillaforums.com/editor/m1/512au5re9znf.pdf

The problem is you need a Rinda tool to sort it out. Like your car, just because a sensor is throwing a code and the ECM is going into Guardian mode....it doesn't mean that is the problem. I would find a mechanic that has a Rinda diagnostic device and knows how to use it.

To answer your original question....you would be billed for at least a day's worth of labor to pull the engine on your boat and another day (maybe day and half) to put it back in. That's why you need to know what is wrong with it before you pull it.

Also you would be billed for all the work done to the engine, including machine shop work. It sounds like a fairly expensive repair to me. I would do as the other guys suggest and get that fault history and a compression check, and probably also a leak down check to be certain that the engine needs to be pulled. A few more diagnostic hours now could save big money later. You could have a bad cam as BT doctor said or you could have a bad valve, requiring only a head removal. Get more info so you can make an informed decision prior to getting out your check book.
