Tipping Dock masters.

Here is a related question for the tippers.

Consider the situation where you are traveling longer distances that a nearby marina, you might not be back at that marina for 1-2 years, if ever. Does that impact your tip?

For us: No impact.

No, I tip based on service received.

Agree. Tips are for service. If you are thinking I'll never be back here again will effect the tip, you could extend that logic to restaurants when traveling and reduce your tips. Most folks would think that approach takes advantage of the wait staff for no legitimate reason. Dock hands work for tips too, and deserve consideration when they do a good job.

I don't know this for a fact, never worked as a dockhand.

I would imagine in a marina where transient traffic is consistent, tips are a significant portion of dockhand take home pay. No different than a restaurant or bar waitstaff.

No impact at all.

For the dockhands I've spoken to, tipping is the VAST majority of their income. When they work hard to help me, I try to show my appreciation. I'll buy a few beers at the bar when they're done too. It's nice to hear the funny stories occasionally.
