I worked on Pender island Saturday. It was a waterworks emergency that required immediate attention so I took my boat because the ferry schedule doesn't revolve around our "us" for some reason
I get there, work the day and all is good. The repairs are made and I'm heading home later in the day. It's still light out but dusk is approaching quickly. I'm cruising at 33 mph... it's completely serene... there's no other boats around and the water is glass calm... I was thinking how it felt like I was standing on the sidewalk it was so calm.
Out of nowhere a big frickin' orca whale comes up for a breath... right in front of me and close! I did the quick evasive maneuver and quickly popped it into neutral. I just... and I mean just missed him! I watched for a minute or so then caught a glimpse of the side I went by... no marks on him! Yay! I let out a sigh of relief cuz' at first I wasn't sure. Sooooooooo close! If he were heading towards me or we were intersecting we would have hit... that woulda' been ugly... I genuinely care about those gentle giants. I watched as he went around popping up here and there. I was thinking there's something wrong with this picture. The whale's migration route is through this pass so I've seen countless whales but I've never seen one by itself like this one. I grabbed a beer and sat still... waiting for him to go... wherever he was going. He didn't though. He was checking me out... circled around once and then a second time... and then started coming uncomfortably close so I waited for him to go around behind me then I put it in gear and did a 1200 rpm putt out of there. He didn't follow.
Whew!!! :wow:

Or hungry..

Same thing happened to me in Alaska with a humpback.

If there was a chunk of coal in my butt cheeks it would have been a diamond for sure!:smt043

Glad it came out oK, I mean the incident not the brown stuff in your shorts!!!:smt038

or... maybe he was horny, saw my black and white boat and got mixed up?

No Orca's are not gentle giants all the time. He just might have been viewing you as his next meal although I read that attacks on humans by non-captive ones are extremely rare!:wow:

Is it mating season??? Your boat looks like it could have been mistaken for an Orca...:smt101

Glad you made it through with out any damage to your boat! He could have fouled your running gear for sure!

I've seen this behavior before. He was asking if you wanted to run it for the pink slip.

Glad you avoided that mess. That could have been a serious injury or death for him and untold damage to your running gear.
