My 2001 410 Sundancer has an intermittent problem with the Raytheon depth finder (tri data) and need to be looked at. I have been told that there is a rubber flapper in the transducer thru hull that prevents water from coming in while the transducer is being removed. Does anyone know for sure before I attempt to have a a look at what my problem may be? I would really like to avoid flooding the bilge (although it could use a good cleaning.

Thanks in advance.

There is supposed to be a flapper that slows the flow of water. I would not call it a valve. It is just a piece of rubber. You should have a plug to go in the hole while the transducer is out.

Let us know if you sink. Carter and I need a couple of 410 parts.

Not worried about sinking..hell, in Barnegat bay, if the boat sank to the bottom I could still get out and walk ashore. My concern is the inevitable stream of water that will flow in and the possibility of it coming in contact with anything electrical in the engine compartment. Think I will just have a go at it this weekend and see what happens. If I do not show up in A/C you will have a good clue as to why.

It is scarier to think about than to do. Just have your plug ready and maybe lube it up with some pool lube or Astroglide or whatever is handy.

PS
I stole your canvas colors.

 Whenever this comes up in conversation, I always point out that if you sink in Barnegat bay, you can stand on the fore deck and not even get your feet wet.

I would disconnect shore power since AC voltage and water don't mix well, but I would think the 12 volt stuff wouldn't be much to worry about.
