Unfortunately unable to try it out this weekend, but I picked up my boat from service today. Was told the problem stemmed from the drain plug and the exhaust ??? Said required pulling motor to fix a $5 gasket/part and reseated drain plug (my words, not his). I truly hope this solves it.

Also, should I change the spark plugs? I bought used last summer and don't know if they've ever been changed. And should I change the oil every season even though engine not ran very hard?

Definitely change the oil before winter layup, if you have one in Texas. After running it the summer months, you get acids and ickies that will cause problems with the metals if allowed to sit through the winter. Changing it removes those impurities and will keeps your bearings and other moving parts protected through the winter instead of slowly eating away at the metals. Ickies is a technical term mechanics use!!

Changing the plugs? Depends on the hours. I changed the plugs on our 89 300 DA. Pulled the ORIGINAL plugs out that had almost 700 hours on them last year, so they were 20 years old! The boat has had one mechanic! He commissioned it from the factory and has taken care of it every year. I asked him about the plugs and he gave me a sheepish look. I knew exactly what it meant and I gave him hell for never changing them! It ran great, but did seem a little easier to start with the new plugs!

Well, I didnt change before the winter, so I suspect I should do that now. I will also change the plugs. My neighbor is a mechanic (has his own shop) and said he could do this for me. Thinking of switching over to synthetic oil. Good idea or not?

Thanks for the replies.
