I am new to boating this year. I bought an 83' Sea Ray 197 SVR with a 898 Mercruiser. This past weekend I had the trim all the way down and it would not go back up. Neither the trim up switch or the trailer button would bring the trim up. The switch itself feels broken when pushing it up so my first though is that the switch is broken but the down works just fine. There is no clicking from the back when I push the switch up or push the trailer button. I was able to get it to trim up by running a wire directly from the battery and touching it where the dark blue wire comes off of the trim up solenoid. Any ideas on what I need to fix? Could it be the switch even though the down works? I am new to this and dont know much about boats. Any help is appreciated. Thanks!

Could be the switch but I'd bet the trim limit sender needs attention.

check fuse first.
use test light or voltmeter and check if you are getting power to solenoid, if yes it it probably needs to be replaced because you stated that pump is in working condition. if no power is going to solenoid - remove and bypass switch - to check if switch ia a problem.
I could not figure out the issue so for a short term fix I ran a toggle switch directly off the up solenoid to the dash. So my down trim is on the handle still but the up is on the dash. Is there any issues with me doing that?

If you are going to "hot wire" the switch, I would place a in-line fuse in the "hot wire circuit" just to be safe.
