Updating a Garmin GPSMap 232

Is anyone familiar with how to update the unit software and maps on a Garmin 232? I've not had much luck in finding useful instructions on Garmin's website, perhaps because its a discontinued product. I have the equipment to do the updates (i.e. the USB card programmer, and their proprietary card) but I'm unclear on how to get the updates onto the GPS itself.

if it's anything like the new ones. Stick the card in the slot on the Chartplotter and turn it on. it will ask you if you want to upgrade (based on the software on the cards). Say Yes and it does the rest.

granted this is based on upgrading my new 545S ( the software and base map where out dated when I bought it).
