My boat is on blocks and there is nowhere nearby to plug in. I have a portable 5.5K generator. Can I plug my shorepower cable into the generator while I work on the boat, and at the same time charge the batteries through the charger? This way I could put my batts back in and be able to use the outlets in the boat to work with. I don't see where it would be any different than running off onboard genny, but thats why I'm asking, cause I don't know!

If you do this, you will die.

Yes, but watch where you place the generator so that the exhaust gases don't create a problem and also ground the generator. Bring a metal stake several feel long, drive it into the ground and connect the ground terminal on the generator's frame to the stake. People ignore grounding, but it's important.

Best regards,
Frank

I do this about once every two weeks to keep my batteries charged during the off season when my boat is in the storage barn. There is no electricity there, so I us my ......... brace yourself.........HONDA EU2000i :smt018

the stake must be 35 cm long and driven to ground with no more than .75 cm showing.

gasp!!

I do the same thing. I figure the generator is downwind, about 5 feet below the cockpit sole and a good 3 feet below the bottom of the boat. I usually go check on the boat, run the Honda during the winter and make motor noises with my lips while sitting at the helm to get my boat fix. I've spent a lot of time over there shoveling snow this winter!
