Today while getting gas and final pump out, (boo hoo) 41 degrees in MSP, I ran the Genny and it would not start. I kept getting a UU undervoltage fault. After about 5 attempts it ran fine. It would crank, then start, then sputter. Troubleshooting seems to lead to problem while the genny is on-line and I experienced it while cranking. The AC genny power switch was off. Any insight would be appreciated.

Jim,

I have a 5E and have not experienced your problems, but it sounds like your choke may be stuck ON. Do you have black smoke coming out of the exhaust while it is "sputtering"?

If so, this indicates your choke may be stuck ON. Some members of the Forum have had luck with tapping the linkage and freeing the choke. You might have some luck searching for threads on the Kohler gennys...

I had the same prroblem, my choke was sticking. I had this happen on some of my old lawnmowers so I'm an old hand.

That causes the UU fault? interesting. I ran it today and it was fine. thanks for the help.

First thing I would check is the spark plugs.... I change mine at least yearly.

Also, temperature will have an effect on the choke mechanism.

That generator is fuel injected and does not have a choke. The uu code is under voltage on the generator output. It will shut down the gen to keep from damaging equipment like the a/c unit. The code comes up sometimes if you try to start the gen with high draw appliances on the boat turned on during cranking.

My apologies Jim. I didn't see that your boat is a 2007. I guess I read the 5K as 5E and offered carb advice. You would have a 5ECD (rather than a 5E) which is fuel injected/catalyst (no choke). Thanks for the catch srok1.

No worries carterchapman. What's strange is that it would try to start and was sputtering and obviously not on line yet, so the UU code is a bit confusing. I didn't consider other accessories draining the battery but I may have a house battery going bad. Also could be plugs, I can check them in the spring but figured they should be good with only 39 hours on the genny, that's a 5ECD genny!
