VHF radio with AIS opinion

... Someone earlier stated that a DSC call could be initiated from the AIS data on the chart plotter.... I'd like to know how that is done if more detail could be provided.

I will try and get a screen shot or two later. But when you click on a target you can select from the top of the screen what you want to do (IIRC). One of those options is DCS Calling. That will prompt the VHF to call, there may be another "do you want to call message" on the VHF, not sure. I will say selecting the target is a bit of hit/miss when using your finger. The remote may be a better choice to use.

EDIT: Missed @b_arrington 's post ... Will still verify with a SS or two.

@ttmott So basically from the plotter select the AIS target desired and you get a menu along the top, select AIS Vessel and you get all the info on that vessel, then select Call with Radio and you get another screen where you can select the channel to call on ( I selected 72) and then select Send and then you need to select Call on the VHF.

This works with both the wireless remote and the Grid 20 or just the touch screen. Sorry for the pic quality, I had to turn the flash off.

Edit: I should add that with most newer MFD's you can also have a DSC contact list and call directly from that list. That basically works the same way, except you don't select the vessel. From the main menu select DSC calling.

Got it thanks! That handset display is pathetic right?

A little tough at times for sure, for me the radio display is a little better, but out of the way when I really need it. So I am stuck with the handset.

Working on the winter shopping list and trying to decide on either the Standard Horizon GX2400 or the Garmin 215 VHF with AIS. Any opinions on either? also planning on adding PA speaker..

Back ground:

Just installed a 88610xsv with a GMR fantom 18. Also built up a full nmea2000 seatalk/seatalkng network so the legacy tridata and st5000, heading and rudder sensor integrate. Dont think there is any special integrations with the Chartplotter above and beyond direct Nmea2000 integration.

Currently have an older Icom but the speaker line output doesn't work. but its connected via 1893..

Just adding an AIS radio only allows you to see others with AIS Transmit… it does not allow others to see you… to do that you’ll need the AIS800 box from Gamin to plug into the network. I. Wouldnt have a boat without AIS. My radio upgrade is to the ICOM M510.
