Hi everyone, We have a 1989 220 DA, On our last outing we had to be pulled in b/c it wouldn't turn over after the kids were swimming ect.The starter was flooded and burnt out the Bendix. We pulled our boat up to the slip, camped and left. Our mech went down there and pulled the starter to be rebuilt- noticed there was water on the pistons. He got it all out put in the new starter- After sitting at the slip for us to pull it out and get up to the mech shop for him to see what was causing the water intrusion, about two days, he noticed there was water on the pistons again- and it had not been turned over, running ect. He's has been working on it for two weeks now, pistons good, no hydro lock- thank goodness. There was a small hole on the exhaust riser- corrosion on a aftermarket part- from previous owner salt water- the engine has a couple hours on it after being rebuilt, I don't know why that wouldn't have been replaced. He said he ran the engine on the stand, no alarms, no water intrusion, thought it was good to go... Put it back on the boat, same issue water in the engine, alarms, overheating within 15 min. Common sense would tell me that if it was good on the stand, then its something in the drive?? Have any of you experienced the same issue, heard of it, anything?? Thanks a bunch!

Sounds like a bad riser or manifold. They corrode from the inside and in salt water only last about 4-5 seasons (raw water cooled right?). If you don't know the age of yours, I'd replace them and any spacers between the riser and manifolds. Bad risers have killed more than one engine. Do this before you rust your valves or freeze up your rings from water intrusion. If it gets worse, you could end up with a hydro lock.

You may have a bad head gasket or cracked head. Most likely your leak is from an exhaust part (Riser, manifold, spacer, etc..).
