So I bought a 1998 SR 215ec from the original owner last year at the end of the season with 474 hours on the Mercruiser 5.0 EFI. The boat was used for its entire life on a fresh water lake. At the sea trial the temperature was normal at 170 degrees F. During my discussions with the PO about the boat, he said he last had the pump serviced prior to the 2018 season (so three seasons on the impeller). I will do a water pump service before I launch this season. Do I need to change the SS impeller housing or just rebuild the pump with the new impeller and gasket set only?

housing is probably fine. i used to buy the kit that came with the wear plate because it wasnt much more and better than a haulout later if i had issues

+1 on above - I've never replaced the housing, but replace the impeller /w wearplate every 3rd year.

Thanks for the replies. The PO made a point to tell me the lake did not have a sandy bottom. I'll just get the pump kit with the gaskets, wear plate and impeller.

I'm in a freshwater lake also - not much sand, mainly mud/clay. Even after 3yrs my impellers still look pretty good, they could probably go longer. But at 3yrs it's time to check other things on the drive like alignment bellows etc - so I just pull it off and change the impeller while I am in there.
