The marina we are at in North Vancouver has just informed all 450 (+/-) tenants that we have to get out by May 31st! This includes something like 80 boat sheds where many folks live and work out of. Plus a number of old float homes that people live in. There is already years-long wait lists at basically every marina within probably 50 miles. Where the heck do they expect everyone to go? Especially with the short notice?!? They “claim” it’s due to the unsafe conditions of the docks, but everyone suspects the real truth is they intend to redevelop the whole area (and not as a marina full of boats). If they were really concerned about the docks they should have been maintaining them over the years instead of just pocketing our fees.

That’s why we are lucky in the fact that our yacht club is basically privately owned by the members. Plus it’s cheaper than all the other clubs in the area. And if you keep a boat there, you are responsible for maintaining your pier, that way you have no one to complain to about it but yourself.

I hate to say it but that marina is owned by a private equity firm. You better start making plans and looking for a new marina (even if it’s in the US) because just looking at the map and what that firm owns, that’s going to be high rise condos and maybe a few private slips for very large boats.

I’m curious why you say it’s owned by a private equity firm? It’s actually owned/controlled by First Nations. I’d be very interested to know if there is an equity firm involved (and the name of the company). We all suspect the real plan here is to redevelop, but the folks controlling everything claim they don’t know what they are doing yet - I think that’s Bravo Sierra.

According to their website, https://www.nchkay.com/, “Nch’ḵay̓ was established in 2018 as the economic development arm of the Squamish Nation. Our mandate is to develop, manage and own the active businesses of the Nation, and allow for the separation of business and politics within the Squamish Nation.”

That’s a private equity firm for the Squamish Nation.
Check out their website, you can see their development projects.

So WTH is the Squamish Nation??

Our marina kicked everyone out a year ago on 30 days notice. That included live aboards, brokers, annual renters. The marina WAS in a massive state of disrepair. After a second episode of a dock hand driving a golf cart into the water, I believe the insurance adjuster came down to survey the scene. He took one look at the condition of the docks and said “oh, hell no” and they terminated the policy. Everyone out in 30 days. They then tore down the marina and are rebuilding it. It’s half done. Rates are almost double because they want it to be the “crown jewel “ of the area. It may be but it’s priced way higher than even the nicest marinas around and has zero amenities. Needless to say, the half that is rebuilt is empty. Only brokerage boats and Oasis’ boat club boats. (The marina is owned by the company that bought Oasis). Can’t imagine where they expect all these 50’ new boats to come from. Thats just not what’s here. I gave them 3 tries to modify their pricing to get us back. Then we bought a slip in the marina next door and will break even in under 3 years. Much better community, too. No brainer.

Part of the reason why I only have trailer boats that live in my heated garage.

Same. The blind spots are a real bi$%^ but it definitely helps avoid dealing with shady marina owners.

I just Love this pic.

Coincidentally, this represents the polar opposite of how the joke thread
digressed after the Chevy with the open sun roof was posted. :D

Yea, I like that one as well. IIRC, this depicts the sad day of pulling the boat out in the fall
and having to move to the 'other side of the tracks' in nearly the same motion. :(

Be sure to post the happy day next spring when
y'all are crossing the tracks in the other direction.

LOL. I only wish I could trailer but I’m pretty sure the towing capacity on my Buick is only 5,000 pounds which is about 10,000 pounds short of what I’d need. Oh yeah, then there’s the issue of not having a barn to keep it. :)

@Nick 55 - I was aware of the nchkay development corp being involved, I’d always just thought of them as just another division of Squamish Nation (a First Nations band), I’d never thought of them as an equity firm - but I guess that’s not far off the mark.

In the meantime for me I’ve already been looking at marinas in Washington state as that’s about the only place that has slips available. Not such a bad thing since the booze and gas is a fair bit cheaper (got to look on the bright side of things).

That really sucks people are just never satisfied
