hello gents !

i,m in the process of replacing the impeller at my 2006 B3 5.0 MPI and see that my front and rear housing shows some wear / scoring . the pump is tight , no leaks and no low water pressure warning or overheating .

should i nevertheless buy the repair kit with the wear plates or just go forward and change only the impeller ?

when it comes to the wear plates - just place them in the housing or something else to know about this ?

best regards

It might not be a bad idea because sometimes with the scoring the new impeller doesn't "seat" well enough and it doesn't draw water. I haven't done the wear plates yet, but it'll be the path I go down instead of spending $700 on a pump. I think they drop it. Might need to grind down some edges here/there but from what a few friends have said, they just drop in. There "might" be a need for a different impeller just because of the differences in space due to the plates taking up room.

I just received my two impellers and will start with the port engine today. Im a bit concerned Im getting over my head, but the cheapest estimate I got was $700 just to replace the impellers.

No records of when they were changed last, so its a must.

I think the hardest part about the process is removing the hoses themselves. Access can be a real pain. If you search on impeller replacements here you’ll see there’s a good bit of information on how to do it and in most situations you can work thought it. A LONG straight blade screwdriver is one of the best friends to help pry off the hoses on the back of the pump. The other piece is to not confuse which hose goes where during reassembly. Dishsoap is a great thing to lube up the new impeller.

I helped a friend do a 260 so I’m speaking from missing knuckle meat :). Probably a similar situation to yours. If the boat is in the water, be prepared to plug the intake hose because it could be a source of a lot of water.
