Is anyone here using a weight distribution hitch on their boat trailer? I am looking at buying a 200 Sundeck that weights about 4500 lbs. My Trailblazer is rated to pull 6000 lbs with a weight distribution hitch, but only 4000 lbs without.

I know that I need the type of hitch what will let the surge brake work correctly and how to set up the tongue weight. However, what I need to know is do you remove the spring arms before you launch the boat? If you do not remove the springs arms, what happens to the weight distribution on the SUV wheels when the weight is removed from the trailer?

Thanks for any feedback.

I keep mine attached anytime I trailer. No need to take them off when launching or when the trailer is attached to your truck. here is a photo of my set up...

I installed a power port on top of the bumper and built a power supply for my winch with two male ends... one in the bumper and one on the power winch on the trailer. I remove that and the brake lights extension so it does not walk away when I am boating and the truck/trailer are sitting at the ramp.

GoAweight, nice setup. Thanks for sharing.

If you believe the advertisment, the weight distribution hitches (WDH) with the chains interfer with the proper function of the surge brake system. The makers of WDH insist that you must have either a Reece SC or Equal-i-zer sway control hitches. GoAweight, apparently you have found that these type hitches are not necessary. You are not having any problem with your surge brake with this setup? The owner's manual for my trailer warns about making sure that the brakes are not partically engaged when using a WDH, causing the brakes to drag and over-heating the barrings, resulting in failure.

Thanks,
Jerry

I tow with a WD hitch that is surge brake compatible. I have converted to electric over hydraulic since spec'ing the hitch, however.

That said, I never remove the equalizer bars unless I am disconnecting the trailer. The bars do not affect the vehicle in any detrimental way when the boat is launched.

Let me know if I can answer any other questions...

I have been using that WDH since 96 on three different trailers. You can feel the surge and hear the slide. Works fine. I just recently rebuilt my hitch to ensure everything was good to go... and it was...

I have disk brakes and if I forget to plug in, I can't back up due to the solenoid locking them up so I know the WDH works backing up and I am currently rebulding the brakes because they are worn out from 7 years of use...

Everytime I stop, I use an IR gun to ensure the bearings are not too hot. Not much else I can do. I think the chain type are fine...

I have no idea about not using chain for WDH?

I bought this particular hitch because it was recommended by the Manufacturer for surge brakes...

Here's the non-chain WD setup...from Reese:

Works great with surge setups though I highly recommend converting to electric-over-hydraulic if you can. The difference is dramatic.
