What’s an assault weapon?

I don't believe anyone here is against enforcing current laws... it's the give an inch, they take a mile most have issues with.

The current administration campaigned on buy backs. How do you buy back something you never owned?

Here's the rub ... what if, hypothetically, the GOV does pass a law to "buy back" the AR. What are law abiding people prepared to do? Become criminals and shoot back? I seriously doubt it. They will fall in line or be on the receiving end of that very weapon of war. More likely nobody is winning this one and nothing will change and the debate will rage on long after a bunch of grade 1's were torn to bits in their classrooms. It's true if guns did not exist there would be no problem - but they do so it's a moot point. So do Nukes and we try to bring about treaties to limit their production. That has failed as well. As I like to do I will quote a person of note —this time Charlton Heston (as he fits this thread well) from his role in Planet of the Apes ... "You maniacs! You blew it up! Ah, damn you! God damn you all to hell!".

You haven't answered the question. Either you know the truth and don't wish to admit it or you're clueless to the truth.

Answered: all armies use assault weapons now. Germany was the first in WWII.

The question was, what Nation's armies use semi-automatic rifles to fight their wars? Please answer the question.

@Mary Moore ...do you realize that these 'assault weapons' you are speaking of are actually less powerful than most hunting rifles? Don't believe me? Look it up. As for high capacity magazines...well most shootings are over after just a few rounds and if you limit the number of rounds in a magazine then they will just carry more magazines. Clinton tried that and it didn't help anything. There were still mass shootings. The real issue now is the snowflake generation can't handle their emotions. They never had to growing up and now that they are in 'real life' they don't know how to react.

The question is what countries don't use assault weapons?
Can you define 'assault weapon'? A big scary black gun? A gun that shoots a big bullet? Assault weapon is an arbitrary term that is thrown around by MSM but nobody can define what one is. Automatic weapons? Well they aren't legal and I know of no private citizen that owns one. I'm sure there are some out there but they aren't as widespread as you might think. Furthermore (and I don't know the answer to this) were any of these mass shootings done using an automatic weapon? When you buy ANY rifle, handgun, whatever, from a gun shop they ARE NOT fully automatic.

Snowflake? Really? time to get get current. Lol! ASSAULT weapons are NOT rifles. They are meant to kill humans quickly in war and have NO place on our streets. Trump lost, move on.

Is this the type of weapon you're talking about?

The question is what countries don't use assault weapons?
Simple. No countries use what you refer to as an "assault" weapon or better yet a "weapon of war." None, zero, nada. They may look the same, but there is one key difference that actaully makes it a weapon of war. Do you even know what that difference is? I doubt it.

So first of all, nobody has defined what you now call a "weapon of war"..... Nice transition from what started as an "assault weapon" which is still undefined. You are definitely swinging in thin air with the comparatives; must be a soliloquy. Let's say I collect antique swords which you could call weapons of war or even assault weapons; what is to be said now? Is my 9mm or .40S&W handgun a weapon of war? Certainly to some definitions. As a collector of swords or firearms or anything else for that matter and in legal possession of such who is to say anyone can mandate that I must surrender to the government? What is next our collection of shotguns or my 1970 Plymouth? It is a slippery slope and the overwhelming populous in the US desires not to take even the first step and for good reason. Let's say our friend @Mary Moore is a legal collector of rare sea shells and ivory carvings and these things are precious and valued by her; what is the difference if I'm a legal collector of firearms which may be just as precious and valued by me? Who is she to define what I can collect and personally own? I can just as easily campaign because she has rare shells and ivory that she is the cause of the mollusk decline and elephant population demise and that she needs to surrender her collection to the government. It is just an emotional pivot without suitable reason.
Why don't we focus on the criminal element and make punishment swift, decisive, impressive, and inspiring? Is that not really the cradle of the issue? A mental issue which we tend to hang our hat on to justify reasonability that ends as a criminal activity is still a criminal undertaking..... We should not discern nor make compromise in the execution of the law.

As an adjunct - It's interesting that those who decree we need greater gun control and reform are the same that decree high security and minimal luxury prison is cruel and unusual punishment.

Look, this is a beaten down discussion that just causes anger and solves nothing.
According to MADD, over 10,000 people died in drunk driving crashes in 2019 and 300,000 were injured. Obviously, we should immediately ban alcohol. Wait...I think I heard something about that in History class. In fact, banning alcohol created the most powerful crime syndicates up to that time in history.
Later, when human arrogance rose again, some well-intentioned government control freak decided drugs should be banned and started something called the “War on Drugs.” Well...that hasn’t worked so well either. We lost the potential talents of a generation or two of young black men rotting in prison for selling a product people wanted. What a shame.
Here we go again. Well intentioned, arrogant humans thinking they can solve a problem by just banning an inanimate object. How many guns are manufactured in other countries? Brazil, Germany, China, etc. They will be created. They will be smuggled in to the US. They will be purchased by people who want them and are interested in doing bad things. Our government will respond in typical fashion by creating bloated government agencies to combat the problem which will only grow as blood flows in the gutters.
Study history. Learn from history.
Banning guns will not stop gun violence. It will only create a criminal network of gun-runners who will grow filthy rich off inner city kids spending stupid amounts of cash on illegal guns. The kids will be arrested by cops. The kids will be spending time in prison. The rich gun runners will be living large in foreign countries. Let’s not lose another generation to good intentions.
This ridiculous cycle must stop.
Think about it.

Instead of gun buybacks and swelling the ATF, how about swelling mental health treatment facilities? How about free medical school for doctors choosing Psychiatric care over Plastic Surgery? How about free college for Mental Health Nursing Degrees and Therapists? Let’s try to tackle the real problem here...Mental Health.

I 100% agree. Like I said, the horse left the barn. It's too late, the guns are on the street and they will never ever leave it. And I understand that people like to collect them —but they are not the same as my '67 Fastback — does not mean they are not collectible and cherished to some —but they just aren't the same. Mental health is the real problem. But until health care gets addressed and I believe socialized, I'm pretty sure the only people seeing a shrink have $$ —mine is $250/hr but the couch is really quite comfortable ;p Sorry to scare the shit outta you with the "S" word.

We could solve all of these innocent sober drivers being killed by drunk drivers by banning sober drivers too.

Just joined Monday, and already calling an upstanding member (@OllieC) here names... not a good start @Mary Moore.
I agree calling names doesn't come off as very intelligent, but to be fair she got called some too. She may have valid points and we all deserve to state our "points" without returning to kindergarten for a fight. Anyone wanna talk about Sea Rays? I'm about to sand the bottom and give her a lick of paint.

The real question is who is dying and why. Can you fairly discuss the subject without knowing?

61% of this number is suicide. Where should emphasis be put...the method or mental health/help?

35% of this number are homicides(death at the hand of another), all homicides are not murder, self defense and accidental for example

52% of homicides are members of a race that only comprises 7% of the US population(black).

89% of blacks murdered are murdered by blacks, 15% of whites murdered are by blacks.

I'll be called a racist for posting a couple of these numbers I'm sure but consider these numbers and the discussions they should generate. Probably the least important is one on more gun control.
Damnit Woody you can't go stating fact like this what are you thinking. Facts hold people accountable and they don't do that anymore. Besides the Media can't boost ratings by doing that.
