My 85 SDA 340 has 3 fram filter canisters mounted on the foward engine rm bulkhead. My owner's manual does not mention them. does any one know what these are for? My merc 260 already has remote fuel/water separators.

Thanks

Can you trace the lines to see where they go? If it's not in your manual, we'd only be taking wild guesses. Pictures may help, but tracing the lines would be best.

A Fram filter would never be installed by a Sea Ray dealer or a Mercuiser service center, so it's obviously something the prior owner did.
EDIT: Let me add that I'm not saying it's a bad thing to have something done by a previous owner - just that it sometimes makes it harder to figure things out. I'm sure, like me, most of you who have purchased a used boat have probably scratched your head on more than one occasion wondering "why the heck did he do that?"

What does the prior owner say?

My "guess" would be remote oil filters for each engine... and...?

It sounds like Fram 1011, or similar, canister filters? If so, then they are fuel filters. One for each main and one for the genie. That's what I had on my 1993 330DA. My 93 330DA came from the factory with the fuel crossover option.

Thanks for getting back with me.

I'm sure they are fuel filters. I'm just wondering why someone would have them installed when engines themselves already have fuel filters attatched to the engine.

I quess it won't hurt to have the added filtration.

I had an 1989 and they are fuel filters Port, Star and genny and they are fram made i think the 1011 is the right number not sure.

They are fuel filters and be very happy where they are are,on my 39 they are right at the rear of the tanks and are a major pain to even get at.

I added mine because of the possibility of getting a load of e10 and having to change filters in the middle of Lake Michigan. Tiara started adding these extra filters about 2 years ago because of the uncertain nature of fuel supplies today. Putting them on the bulk head makes them easy to change. Prior owner may have done this as I did as a preventive measure.

I have a filter at each tank and on the engines, this is the way Sea Ray did it on my boat back in 1989. There is a switching system that allows the fuel to be switched to either tank for the engines but the generator always runs off the starboard side. Not sure why Sea Ray would double filter the system but it sure looks pretty.
