Well I just filled up for $622.00, and I did the pumping, and pump out. Gave him $10.00 which for what he did I feel was adequate.

Assisted with the lines, pulled out the fuel line and pump out hose and ran the credit card.

But 20% for me would have been $136.84.

I bet the attendant really likes 1,000 gallon rigs with 20% tippers:thumbsup:

These pump jockeys are paid by the hour (minimum wage probably) and have a terrific opportunity to supplement their hourly wage by offering excellent service. That can be a number of things starting catching your boat & tying it off properly, friendly personable greeting with a smile, no snotty attitude, performing the actual pump out and fuelling duties, etc. The kids that are mowing lawns and others behind the scenes don't have this same opportunity for tips. I'm sorry guys, but no service ... no tip. Besides standing there with music playing in their ears, just exactly what is in their job description? The marina must be paying them for something you would think. I am sure that the management would like to know what their front line employees are doing or not doing to promote their fuel sales. For the most part, most places where we take on fuel, etc. offer excellent service and I tip accordingly. Here endeth the rant.

"Stand back, and put that cigar out"...works good on the river where I often boat.

I tip the same as a restaurant. 20%.

when you come back, they remember you and you get the service you expect. What goes around comes around.

Same here. Just pumped around $600 of fuel last Friday. I wasn't about to hand the dock attendants $120. They'd have to do a heck of a lot more than tossing a line and handling a fueling nozzle for that kind of money. Heck, I don't make that kind of money for that little effort. The wait staff in a restaurant works pretty darned hard for their 20%.

Best regards,
Frank

I have been trailering my Searay this year so no tip. Even though I live in a state that you are not allowed to pump your gas they usually hand me the nozzle.

I can buy a hooker cheaper than that and she'll pump more than my fuel.

I am usually in the $5-10 range. I know that in most states they cannot pump fuel into your boat but they can help out in others ways for sure. Most of the dockhands are good but I have seen my share of duh's also.

Sorry Dude, if you are tipping 20% you got more money then brains.....

I don't tip for fueling but if a pump out is involved I usually tip them $10

Fueling by a trained dock attendant is not allowed per some f'd up Corps of Amateurs rule on Lake Lanier as well as a pumpout will cost you $15 per tank or $30 per tank over 50 gallons here campers.

I make sure to give $5 a pumpout and offer cold beverages if they do a good job/are helpful. (by the way, had one hottie at Bald Ridge Marina subsidize her degree at a local gentlemen's club, and the $5 per pumpout I had given her, ruined any small chance at all she would even speak to me...) Should have known better...

I just appreciate the fact that these young kids doing this work are trying to stay busy while off from college. A generous tip means a lot to them and it does not break my bank.

I usually spend about $200 bucks everytime I top off (seldom run the boat dry) so a $30-$40 tip is not unusual for help tieing up, filling tanks, and pumping out.

I would not do this for a full time professional guy working at a marina.

Special case here. These kids need every break they can get and I show my appreciation as I am able.

You may call it no brains, but it does not bother me.

If they help me dock then I tip them $5 ... if they don't do anything but hand me the hose then I tip only a few bucks.

I usually fill up at my marina where they pump the gas for you. It is always young girls working on weekend before going back to school in fall. I always give at least $5 as they need the money and are always pleasant.

Huh, it seems on our corp lake you can't pump your own fuel, the "trained" dock attendant has to fuel the boat. No strippers though:smt009. $5 per fill up or pump out seems to keep the guys happy. I usually give the guys at our high and dry $20 - $40 per year (there's a lot of them), but it doesn't seem to make a difference in service. Seems me and the admiral taking the time to learn their names and talking to them like equals goes farther than the money.

With that kind of tipping, you should be able to afford a Platinum sponsorship.

I fill up at my marina @ almost $4 per gallon, I buy $3 ice, $300 mth slip, $90 per hour service, and $2 hot dogs. We are on the boat 90% of our weekends.

no tip, they get enough of my money.

Coming from the other side of the dock...

In highschool I worked at a private yacht club. I hardly ever got tipped for gas, every once in a while for tieing someone up and one or two guys would tip you for pump out (the crappiest job of all!) haha

We would do everything, run to untie the boat from the dock, run over to the fuel dock to catch them and tie them up, pump all the gas, get ice, add water to the tanks, untie them and run back over to the dock to tie them back up. (lots of running)

We would do everything at pumpout so the owners could leave if they wanted to so they wouldn't have to smell it...

The people who tipped or even were just nice and said thanks got the even better service.

Everyone thought that we got great tips and made alot of money but I would make 15 bucks on a good week and make 6.25 an hour (this was 4 years ago).

I'm not saying the guys on the dock think that you need to tip or even suggesting to do so. Some of my favorate people didn't tip but were just nice, said thanks, and actually ment it... that really did go a long way when we were busting ass for them. (this was a private club though where we worked like crazy, not the little gas guy that sits on his butt all day)

If I'm pumping my own gas and have to drag the lines I won't tip. If I can sit there in my boat drinking a beer and never lift a finger I'll throw the guy some money.

I never get gas from the dock.. Too much water inside.. I buy gas from land and carried to my boat and filled it.. I know some marina don't allow you to do that.. I'm glad my marina does.. I really hate dock gas.. Overpriced and water inside.
