I have a 1986 searay 268 weekender. I recently installed a 350 vortec engine. The get's up on plane in under 13 seconds. According to the gps my max speed is 32 mph. Is that about right for a boat this size with a single small block?
what would max speed be on a 86 268 weekender?

Hey Lime,
As you know, I have the same boat as you, but mine still has the original 260 and Alpha I. On perfectly flat water, no wind, I can get low 30's out of mine. I've never timed it to see how quickly I get her up on plane.

What's your RPM's at WOT? That will be the determining factor. Does the new vortec have a marine cam in it?

Don't know if you can get much more, that is about all mine will do. A 6000lb. heavy arse boat is underpowered with a 350 if you want to go keep up with Mario Andretti.

Yes it has a marine camshaft. My current wot's are 4200. Should be around 4600.But i'm not that picky..lol.. Just wondering what type of speeds people are getting with this type of boat. I figure i'm probably pretty close to my max speed. I'm not about to spend several hundrend dollars just to gain an extra mph or 2..Mooner some time if u can time your boat to c how long it takes to get on plane. I know with the old engine it took me atleast 1 min and 30 seconds to come up on plane. The vortec has alot more torque and for a boat this size it has a great hole shot

My '87 268 DA with a 5.7/260+A1 has a max speed of 31 knots @ 4500 WOT. My normal cruise speed is around 23 knots @ 3500 rpm. So I believe your numbers are quite realistic to this heavy and little underpowered boat. Your WOT however is a bit too low.

Same boat, 86 268, new 350, about 300 hp, OMC cobra 1.41 final drive ratio, points ignition, old quadrajet, 15.8x15 solis prop, 30 mph on the gps at 3400 rpm wot. I'm thinking the tac is off. I Replaced the points with a pertronix kit and coil, and replaced the quadrajet with a rebuilt. I haven't had it out since the upgrades but will this week. I'll let you know if I pick up any more speed. I think 30 to 35 is all there is.
