So my 2001 340 came with the standard CO monitor above the Galley (which I probably need to replace), and I supplimented with the standard home plug in style (with battery backup).

Like many boaters I also have dogs onboard and frequently have the generator running while I'm either in the water, on shore. The standard alarms are nice if your on the boat but I can't hear them that far away.

This year I added a Nest CO/Smoke detector to my boat that connects through my verizon hotspot (always on the boat). when I'm away from the boat, at the bar, or just on shore I usually have a phone (or my wife does) and the NEST can notify me through their App that the CO/Smoke detector is going off so I can get back to the boat. I'm sure parents would like this as well if they leave their kids on the boat in a similar situation.

Thoughts? Any others doing this?

I do need to replace the builtin one, and preferably with one like this that runs of DC power. The NEST that I installed runs on its own battery so its not generator connected, or wired either.

NEST has its own battery
Hotspot is DC connected, and has its own battery.

there is a way to wire the co detector to the generator so it will automatically shut it down. fireboy makes it. theres a module that gets wired in. i think detector is around 90$ and then another 90$ for the module

I use SimpliSafe for CO, freeze, high water, and burglary. It has its own built-in cellular chip (either Verizon or T-Mobile). I have the app on my phone, I can check status or if an issue they call, text & email me...

Nice, I like that feature. I was looking at a remote monitoring product that I could remotely shut it down. So I may also look into this.

Haven't looked at simply safe for the boat, I was looking at Sirenmarine to do similar functions. I liked that it had the ability to remotely interact with devices as well, like turn on the Air Con, or connect a relay to shut the generator down.

I'll know I've run out of boat projects to spend money on when I start buying Nest Fire/CO products for my boat :):) I imagine the halo lighting affect is neat at night though!

I have three battery-only Kidde smoke/CO detectors in addition to the two factory installed, hardwired CO units. I think the battery units are $10 each at Home Depot...cheap. I have one in each berth and one in the galley area.

We had a fire (electrical) in our marina a couple years back that some folks nearly slept through onboard. That caused me to do two things - 1.) install the three additional battery smoke/co detectors and 2.) I stopped using my phone as a "white noise machine" and replaced it with a plug-in unit (fan in a box). I'm a light sleeper and I will/should wake up if that rig stops. My hope would be that I would wake up if there were a shorts/arcing/trouble electrically before it progresses to the point that you can no longer exit the boat from the cabin door. Exiting the boat via the front hatch is not as fool-proof as some might think...especially if parked bow-in with no ladders in the water nearby.
