When is it too hot to go boating?

If I had cockpit air conditioning maybe boating wouldn't be too bad but that wasn't an option on a 260DA. :smt043

Dave

Maybe you could do something like this guy did:smt101 Oh thats right portable Gennies on a boat:smt021

Here Here!, I agree with this comment. 95 degrees with humitiy at 70+ is worse than 110 with 40% humidity any time, just take off to the water. Besides, have you not heard that a bad day of boating is much better than a good day at work?

We here in New England have decided, If the sand on the beach, melts and turns to glass, then it is too hot to boat. Other than that.....Game on!

Dave, Dave, Dave.
You need to move here. It's like Goldilocks.....just right.

We went boating today but in hindsight it was one of those days when my wife and I both agreed we should have stayed home. Not only was the air temperature hovering at 100 degrees our water temperature is at 90 + degrees as well pretty much everywhere. Surface water temperatures are even hotter than that. So you cant even cool off in the water.

In the nine years I have boated on Lake Wylie I can never remember water temperatures being this high ever. The bad part about this is August, traditionally the hottest month, is yet to come. If I had cockpit air conditioning maybe boating wouldn't be too bad but that wasn't an option on a 260DA. :smt043

I know we are not alone with this hot weather but I wonder who has waters as warm as ours?

Dave

Ours isn't that warm thankfully. How did your A/C keep up?

I went out today and unless we were going 30, it was too hot. Im leaning towards not boating in July/August here in FL just to avoid the whole "sweating my b@lls off" when cleaning the boat after...

90 degree water temperature is hard to believe. How does that happen? What must be growing 90 degree water?

Todd, you got it! We were out today floating between Illahee and Bainbridge Island with air temp in the upper 70's and the water temp in the mid to upper 50's. It's gotta hit close to 60 before we'll jump in. Today we had a stiff 20 knot breeze so no thoughts of doing that. I'd take a 90 or 100 degree day on Puget Sound any day. Maybe in a couple of weeks on Lake Washington for the Hydros and the Blues. The water temp there can reach the upper 70's on a hot day. Got my fingers crossed!

Eddie

Dave,

We were out in the same 90 degree plus water today. Yeah it's hot. My son had it worse though as he was sailing in the heat with only an occasional light breeze.

Wesley,

We have all learned a great deal on this board. Simply use some of the knowledge and apply it to the mower. For example, Paige I cannot mow the yard. Looks like the mower has a problem with the IAC or use the old vapor lock excuse. Try it and report back.

It's an anchor out or dinghy ride to the sandbar for me. I'll sit in the water drinking a cold beverage watching the dog swim. Otherwise I'll go swimming in the pool or sit in the air conditioned community room. Most likely I'll be at the sand bar like last weekend. They were predicting 98 degrees on Lake Erie tomorrow but now calling for ONLY 93.

On the boat during the day, yes. We will anchor and promptly get in the water.

We actually backed-out of an overnighter on the hook this weekend because the forecast has 101F @ 50% humidity during the day (heat index 110+F) and the lows at 78F @ 90% humidity. We will be out during the day. Looking for A/C at night.

Thats when you go boating and then skinny dipping . :smt038

Ditto on the 90+ water. When we anchored this evening at around 7:00 local time, air and water temp was 93-94. I immediately jumped in and it literally felt like bath water!

I agree with skinny dipping, but the kids have to be staying somewhere else. It was not that many years ago that bath suits on the CT river was the exception, not the rule. I can remember a time about 15 years ago, on Labor Day, coming up from the LI Sound on the river, where we came across 3 party boats, loaded with people, and not one bathing suit shown.

This past week the incoming tide in Boston Harbor was 68 degrees. Outgoing tide was 72 degrees on a 90 degree day. Measured on my Smartcraft Vessel View.

It is the 90+ degree water that finally got to me today not the 100 degree heat. We have boated plenty of times with air temps in the 90s and high humidity but in years past the water was cool enough to make it all worthwhile. I have never seen our lake this warm. Jumping into this water is like taking a hot bath when you are all sweated up; not very enjoyable and certainly not a good way to cool off.

If I had a genny I suppose I could hide in the cabin like some folks do but I think that defeats the whole purpose of being on the water doesn't it?. Air temps will cool off next week ( low 90s for a few days) but I doubt the lake water will cool off.

I'll still be out there on the water regardless of the air and water temperatures. Now if I could just find some nice cool lake water somewhere.:smt100

Geez Dave, it seems like yesterday you were complaining that you had NO water and now the water you do have is too hot. You need to move to the Shore. Wait, never mind, it would be too salty there.

Henry, we are heading to Wingarsheek this morning, How are the GREENIES at the beach?

Boy I would love to try it out in you neck of the woods. Photos I have seen look just gorgeouse. JUST RIGHT.....our vessels name. Dave
