Currently going through re-comissioning a new to me 89 Amberjack 270. I'm replacing all fluids and filters due to the unknown age of what's in there now. So grease fittings on the stern drives...I've got a grease gun loaded with 2-4-C. I see three zirk fittings, but now reading through other forums am confused on what goes where...I've already flushed the gear lube with fresh SAE-90W, oil/filter change coming up, along with gas/water sep filter, and a few others...

2-4-c is the propshaft and usually anything else they touches water since it has Teflon

they replaced the other speciality greases with extreme grease. That would be the coupler and any other sealed zerk

Not for nothing, but it should tell you right on the packaging.

Basically, anywhere but needle bearings.

You put 90W in the drives? Previous owner of our 19' putter did that. The outcome wasn't good. We ended up replacing the lower end because the lube didn't have the proper additives and it was eating it's self.

Quicksilver 90W Gear Lube

Just checking. When we bought the small boat, there was a box of parts and he had used something like 85w-90 in the drive. The lower was shot among many other problems.

Yeh, I almost did the same. Learning as I go almost put multi weight Gear Lube in stern drives before realizing that's only for 75hp and below...yikes!

Simplest thing with the gear lube is just use the Quicksilver High Performance Gear Lube (the blue stuff). It will work in all Mercruiser lower units - sterndrive and outboards.

Regarding 2-4-C, I still have some, but only use it on the propshaft and shift linkages I use the Extreme Grease everywhere else. You do not want to use 2-4-C bearings like the gimbal bearing, wheel bearings etc - use it up other places - propshaft, hinge pins etc. It is also good for other things not boat related where you need a good grease.
