We have been retired for ten years and before we retired tried Florida, Arizona and California. We spent lots of time in each place. Ended up building our retirement home just 5 minutes from our lake home that was our residence for 43 years. West Michigan is tough to beat. It has a reasonable cost of living, fabulous health care, reasonable taxes and the best Great Lake for boating. People complain about the snow, but we passed the time skiing when we were younger.
Lake front real estate is widely available in a broad range of prices from $200,000 to $25,000,000. The Great Lakes give you access to the Great Loop and Lake Michigan allows you to boat from Chicago to New York which we have done. We are not looking for more left wing voters, however.
