Windlass Problem

Windlass problem, spools in fine but will only turn a few revolutions at a time in the out / reverse direction. Feels like the battery is way low because it looses speed as it reverses. It is original 1994 equipment. Can contactor / relay cause this condition ? Thanks for any input.

Update on windlass problem. Pulled apart my Lawrence Simpson V500 windlass to find water had corroded the main ball bearing. The main shaft that drives the gypsy was locking up in one direction but spinning in the bearing in the other direction. Replaced bearing, cleaned and regreased. Works fine now.
