how do you get the filter on fast enough not to leak oil everywhere with and upside down filter? just curious.
My oil filters are also mouted with the open end down. The secret is to use the proper filter from Merc or Quicksilver. The Merc is #35-866340K01; the Quicksilver is #35-866340Q03.
Both of these filters have a check valve in them that prevents the oil from draining down and out of them unless more oil is pushed into them under pressure. This way, the filters stay full of oil at all times. When removing, just crack the seal and wait a minute or so for any oil between the filter face and the housing to drain back into the engine. You should then be able to slowly unscrew the filter, remove, and tip it upright without spilling a drop. The filter will be heavier than your new one since it still contains oil that is trapped within it.
The last owner of my boat used car type FRAM filters - man what a mess removing them!:smt013 Since using the right filters I haven't spilled a drop!
