Good Morning,
The fuel tank in my 190 is mounted in the bow, Does anyone know what the tank is made of? I beleive it to to be aluminum. Question is , whats the best way to clean out the tank? View attachment 18449when I removed the carburator to rebuild it I found all kinds of white corrosion in it. Also it plugged and killed the original fuel pump and also an electric pump that the PO had installed. Help!
Thanks in Advance,
Michael

My tank in the bow is steel. The corrosion in the carb and pump are most likely from water. Why did the PO install an electric fuel pump. Unless it's hooked up to a pressure regulator with cut off and a high pressure fuel filter you may be in for a boat BBQ. . An electric fuel pump can actually push the filter element into the fuel lines and up to the car/injectors. The standard filter is made be drawn through with the pump on the suction side. Return the fuel system back to original and you will have very few problems.

You can use aluminum, steel, or plastic for the tank.

On our '76 it was steel. I took it out and had it cleaned and lined. Wouldn't come out without cutting away some of the glass under the dash though. But the trim still hides it. I couldn't find any plastic ones that would fit back then. Good luck

Ok, So the tank is a red plastic tank. Is that a problem? It is hooked up to the filler neck on the bow of the boat. I might look into remove the tank and cleaning it or I might try to chemically clean the tank. I really hate to cut up the underdash to get the tank out. I have a siphon pump{manual} type and have had good luck with purple power in cleaning other tanks in the past. So, if I can get the tank clean and and replace the pump with an original with the fuel filter in the inlet pressure side, might that cure the problem.
Thanks Michael

I think the PO decided the factory pump was not doing the job. I removed and inspected the pump and found it was rusted and corroded. He figured the original pump was to exspensive and installed the cheap electric pump instead. It was also plugged and not working. So, I have located a replacement pump and am in the process of rebuilding the original carburater, had to get a second donor carb. to put a decent carburater together, the original was pitted and corroded. Will try to updated as time allows.
Thanks MIchael

The plastic tank may be a replacement as I don't believed SR used them in that year. Check you underdash and see if it is not already cut out. Going back to original may not be cheap but it might save a boat fire and someones life.
Way to go on the carb rebuild. Hope it all works out.

Yea, sounds like someone already replaced the tank.
