I was asked by a dock neighbor to look at a 2000 340 Sundancer that he is considering purchasing. The boat has twin 7.4 liter raw water cooled I/O s with Alpha 2 out drives. In the ER, there are the usual SeaRay stringers (grey gelcoated about 1.5" wide), BUT on each side of each of the 4 stringers that support the engines, there is a "sistered" stringer that looks like green composite material of some sort. The color is about the same as pressure treated lumber. The bilge had water here and there, but the stringers and the green things appeared to be solid. That is why i believe they are some sort of composite material. The sistered pieces are about 1" thick, and almost as tall as the grey gelcoated stringers. The sistered stringers run from the transom to the firewall. Each stringer has one of these on each side of it. They appear to be original equipment. I cannot tell how they are afixed to the stringer (no screws or other fasteners were evident).

In addition, there is a flat piece of the same stuff on the floor of the boat between the engines. There was none between the two center stringers.

I don't know what these are, or when they were installed. Anyone out there with a similarly equipped boat ever seen anything like this? Was this a fix added by SeaRay or someone else?

Thanks for your help.

Nope, nothing like that on my 2002. Just the grey stringers and a dry bilge. I would run from it. Sounds sketchy to me.

I've seen a few of those models and never have I seen what you described. One thing I do know is that boat will FLY with big blocks/out drives! Might be worthwhile getting a pro's opinion and/or history from the previous owner. May just be someone's idea of preventative maintenance?

Correct, Bravo II not Alpha II. My bad.

So from the sound of responses i believe these were not put there by SeaRay. Unanswered is whether they were put there as preventative maintenance or whether there was a problem. In either case i think it signals a problem.

Thanks for responses.

They are not factory installed at all. the bildge should be gray even on floor. sounds like run as fast as you can from this boat.

I would wonder even they were there for preventative medicine, what was the guy thinking to not have professional done. My 340 is all gray in the bilge. I would not even think it was possible to have a stringer problem on a 10 year old boat unless he re powered with something crazy and put way to much torque on the stringers.

Friend bought the boat.

According to mechanic @ SeaRay dealer, this was a Sea Ray "Executive Boat", which is something like a demo boat that SeaRay uses to give people test rides and such. Again, according to same mechanic, the sistered stringers were installed at the factory. The other thing that was different about this boat is that there was some type of foam batting sound proofing materials stuffed in all kinds of places that would normally be empty compartments used for storage. For example, all the compartments in the aft cabin had this foam batting stuffed in them.

Not sure what to make of it all as, like the rest of you I had never seen anything like this.
