Was out and running around 2500rpm, starboard engine just shut off, smelled something burnt. Drove in on 1 engine. Now engine cranks but won't fire. Batteries seem fine. Any idea's?

someone told me could of been the alternator burning out and blowing the 90a fuse on the starter.

Just not sure if this is a DIY or I need a boat mechanic. Appreciate any insights..

Do you see anything unusual when you looked at the motor?

Is the serpentine belt still there?

Did it overheat?
Oil level?

nothing unusual, belts are fine. Oil, Temp and Battery gauges were normal. I am thinking alternator shorted out and blew and that was the burnt smell.

If the engine cranks, wouldn’t that eliminate the 90 amp fuse(breaker) being tripped/blown?
If alternator went bad, it wouldn’t charge the battery, that wouldn’t keep it from starting, unless the battery was dead, or too low of voltage for ignition....

On my 07 350 MPI, Fuel pump relay going out would make the engine crank, but never start. I never smelled anything burnt, but when I looked at the relay or, in one case, the harness, they were definitely burnt.
