2003 280 SUNDANCER LOWER DRIVES

i need to replace both drives lower units alpha 1 gen 2 drives 4.3 engines but dont know the ratio and best place to get a rebuilt?

Get the serial numbers off the upper housing or look on the label on the spark arrester cover it may have the serial numbers. Run those on Mercruiser site and it should identify the ratios.

They’re likely 1.81:1 but that’s irrelevant since the ratio is in the top half of the alpha if you only need to replace the lowers. Or do you mean the whole drive? What’s wrong with them?

i had SEI on my 290 and blew up more than one. Others have had good experience but I’d get a OEM merc after what I went through. Your 280 is a heavy boat for alphas and id want the strongest unit I could find back there.

the counter rotation is in the lower so you’ll need both a standard and a counter if doing the lower half.

the diver didnt replace zincs and had corrosion and crack on each by props so need to replace both lowers, i have serial number so call around this morning thanks
