Does anyone have experience with replacing the trim switch on the throttle handle of a 240 Sundeck (or similar model)?

The trim switch at the helm stopped working in both directions, but the switch at the transom works fine, so I believe the switch itself has failed.

I’ve ordered the replacement switch (https://www.boats.net/product/mercury/858679T1), and began to follow the wire that exits the throttle control above the starboard cubby at the helm. However, it quickly disappears behind the cubby and must be wire-tied down because it doesn’t budge. I can’t see any way to remove the cubby panel or access the wire.

Has anyone had success with replacing this? How do you access the wiring harness to replace the switch?

Thanks in advance for your help

In case anyone else runs into this issue, it turns out the trim switch was not the problem.

There was a broken power lead (due to corrosion) near the trim pump at the wire splice from the factory. It was a bit hard to find since the wire loom was covering the splices.

Power is supplied to the trim switch at the helm via the red wire, and it returns down either the green or blue wire to energize the pump when the trim switch is depressed (green = down, blue = up).

Since the red power wire was severed, the trim switch wasn’t working in either direction. However, the trailer trim switch at the transom still worked since its connection was past this splice.

Good find.

Now... you do know what your next project is, right? I'll give you a hint... it has to do with "preventative maintenance"... since one wire has severed from corrosion.........

I would also replace that trim motor bracket asap. You can get non-OEM ones made of SS for less than the OEM one. Sometimes it's best to stay OEM, but not in this case.

I just replaced this switch on my 2001 240. The switch was bad. Although it's moot, to access the wiring for the throttle trim switch, remove the speaker: there you will find the connector.
