My marine mechanic left the drain plug in after winterizing:smt089. It sat the entire winter under a cover, but rain and snow still got in, because the bilge had water up to the deck. I have to give the guy credit, because he's taking full responsibility for the mistake.
The lower half of the engine was submerged in rain water for at least a month. Everything seems to be okay, and after a complete crankcase flush, the engine is running fine.
My mechanic says that even though the starter is working fine at the moment, I should prepare for starter failure at some point, because his experience is that these starters don't take well to being submerged for any amount of time.
We then discussed the job of starter replacement..
He hasn't had experience with this engine in this hull. Being a big block shoehorned into a relatively small engine compartment, does the engine need to be pulled in order to replace the starter?
