Seeing the running gear at survey for the first time . Tell me about the underwater exhaust tubes? Good bad quiet.
Always have had exhaust thru transom ports. Any maintenance other than paint do they or should they have zincs
enlighten me please

Congrats, I have a gasser so my advice might be off for your model but they are bronze and don’t require zincs. Nothing special I know beyond this that I am aware of.

They really quite the boat down and actually tend to pull the exhaust from the engine due to the water flowing over them. As your boat doesn't have mufflers these serve the purpose. The exhaust is actually a fiberglass tube that ports out the bottom of the boat and these exhaust ports cover the hole in the bottom of the boat. They are held in place with four stainless steel studs and fastened inside of the boat. There is that all-important bonding wire that connects to one of those studs so the hull zinc can act as the sacrificial anode.
There should be small bypass exhaust hoses that exit the side of the boat so the engine can idle without backpressure.

Be sure your boat yard is aware during lifts as they hang down below the hull. Be sure the outlets are clear of the straps on the travel lift. Our 2003 39 MY has warning decals along the exterior of the gunnels to address this.

My 34 has the same setup. They work great and give a quiet ride. I paint them with the normal bottom paint to protect them. Dont loose one or knock it off, they aren't cheap if you can find one.

They are quiet and essentially problem free. With the bypass you get nice, smooth low RPM operation. I am doing some PropSpeed in the offseason so decided to coat them as well:

This picture is post-cleanup, before paint.

Only drawback I have experience so far, and this is only if you are somewhere with rodents like muskrats (which I am), is they are hard to fit with animal guards.

If anyone knows a solution, I would be interested.

On a related note, are you aware of the thread specifically for this model (https://clubsearay.com/index.php?threads/420-44-db-owners-club.39333/)?

Stuff with stainless wool like a stainless scrubber.
Won't rust and critters can chew thru!

Ah, but you see, I need it all year 'round including while commissioned, not just during during winter layup.

There are guards that stay installed during operation.
