I'm currently undergoing the 1,000-hour service, and it appears that I might have to replace two after-coolers due to corrosion and pitting on the ends. I welcome any feedback and would appreciate information on pricing from those who have already replaced these parts.

Is this where the large O-Ring seals? A dock neighbor attempted a repair similar to this condition using JB Weld but the aluminum continued to corrode around the JB weld epoxy. I'm not sure they prep'd the surface correctly BTW. Another commercial situation where the part couldn't be replaced they had a machine shop bore the hole and press in a stainless steel sleeve.

Thanks for the reply, I like the sleeve idea!!!

In the spring of 2022, I replaced my two after coolers, which have been redesigned and also require an additional mounting bracket. I purchased one directly from Cummins with a resale number I have for $3,655.00 and my mechanic found another and charged me the same price, plus $600.00 for the two brackets and bolts.

Seaboard marine is now selling the one after cooler and bracket for $6,086.00 as seen in the below link;

I also replaced the gear/fuel coolers, which were also original and shot;

"Wow, that is a great price for the cooler today; they typically retail for over 6k. Do you think your mechanic might have more at that price or perhaps a resale number I can use? I'm willing to drive down to NY tomorrow! :)))) Unfortunately, I also need a turbo for my port engine, and I'm just trying to figure out the best way to save the most, as this $1k service is turning into a bit of a nightmare, lol."

"A Holset turbo sold by Cummins costs $6,900, while a Holset not sold from Cummins is priced at $3,000. I'm trying to figure out the difference between the two. If anyone has bought the $3,000 one, could you share your experience and let me know if there are any notable differences?"

I have a question for the 480/500 folks about spending weeks at a time on board with 2 teens and 2 adults. I had a 540 under contract but ultimately decided I did not want the hassle of Pods. Considering the 550/580 and the 480/500. I know it's probably silly to be considering the 2 against one another but the 540 is out and nothing in between with a full windshield. There's a good bit more 480/500's out there and I'm thinking hard about this model for a few reasons. However, we do plan to spend a fair amount of time overnighting for longer stretches both with the kids and without. What's the longest you all have stayed aboard straight and when did it start to feel cramped? How many of you were on board? Is it reasonable to stay on board for say a month in the Bahamas or will it feel cramped real quick? Looking for real world feedback to help with the decision. The 550/580 is nice but it's a different beast for a lot of reasons. I'm open to both but looking for feedback. Thanks!

If things get crowded after a few weeks
Grab a hotel for a night and rejuvenate
If the moneys there I’d get the 580
Both boats are dream boats for me

540 is also a beauty boat but I’m scared of pods as well

What specifically are you afraid of in regards to pods?

What specifically are you afraid of in regards to pods?
Breakdowns
Cost
Parts availability
Mechanic availability = cost again
Recovery of said missing pod
Constant engineering changes
Obsolete
Maintenance
Electronics/joystick
Resale

Yep.. never any issues with shafts.

Oh come on….. break an obsolete Ferrari or a chevy pickup ….. there is a huge difference
I have buddies with pods and they love them and love showing off parking them….. no thanks I like the struggle and without thrusters no less

Dude... obsolete?
Sure, mercury and cummins had their falling out.
Have you seen the lower unit on those Verado 600s? Sure look like pod like technology to me..
Were pods dropped on the public too early? Yep.
Are these systems now well understood and maintainable like any other system on a boat? Yep

I'll take my more efficient, faster, easier to dock with joystick when needed boat 10 times out of 10.
You're entitled to your opinion, as am I. No need to disparage them

We typically spend 10-14 days at a time on board ours during 4-5 trips per season (not including long weekends every week at the marina or other destinations). We're empty nesters and probably half of the time take our kids and their spouses, or other couples with us. It doesn't seem cramped as usually some are down below while others are up in the cockpit. There are times that we've all been down in the salon for a movie on a rainy day and it's been just fine.

I haven't heard any of of our guests complain about the smaller "wet" head in the aft stateroom as the shower curtain does a good job of keeping the water in the shower area. Quite a few of them use the shower rooms in the marinas as well. Some of them like the twin beds, while others will push them together to make a queen.

I've looked pretty seriously at upgrading to a 55/58DA and haven't pulled the trigger yet as we really like our 48DA and it's very easy to get a slip just about anywhere.

Any questions...just ask.

Don’t take offense…. There is enough of that in here lately. I was a big supplier to Cummins when the merc Cummins pod partnership started….. I got involved with the interface between Cummins and merc between the hull. It was a gong show ….. engineering was changing daily….. I lost a lot of money in prototypes and trying to make it work….. in the end I walked away and pissed off both companies….. I’ve been sour ever since….. just so you know where I’m coming from
Not a pod fan
