48 DA Owners Club

Don’t take offense…. There is enough of that in here lately. I was a big supplier to Cummins when the merc Cummins pod partnership started….. I got involved with the interface between Cummins and merc between the hull. It was a gong show ….. engineering was changing daily….. I lost a lot of money in prototypes and trying to make it work….. in the end I walked away and pissed off both companies….. I’ve been sour ever since….. just so you know where I’m coming from
Not a pod fan
Sorry for your experience as a supplier. I understand you have an axe to grind. However, your 'not a fan' is not from the experience as an owner.

Edit..
I have a pretty thick skin and don't take offense easily.
Pods have a place in boats as do outdrives, vdrives, shafts and outboards. I'm sure we can all agree that.

No not as an owner but as a heavily involved engineer supplier. Both companies did not get along and the product suffered early on. I had a shaft boat on the Chesapeake back then and flew to charlotte where the jv took place in the same building as holset. I sat in those meetings when things weren’t going well. It was not a good partnership from the beginning. Like I said I have friends with pods and love them. I’m just not a fan

I have a question for the 480/500 folks about spending weeks at a time on board with 2 teens and 2 adults. I had a 540 under contract but ultimately decided I did not want the hassle of Pods. Considering the 550/580 and the 480/500. I know it's probably silly to be considering the 2 against one another but the 540 is out and nothing in between with a full windshield. There's a good bit more 480/500's out there and I'm thinking hard about this model for a few reasons. However, we do plan to spend a fair amount of time overnighting for longer stretches both with the kids and without. What's the longest you all have stayed aboard straight and when did it start to feel cramped? How many of you were on board? Is it reasonable to stay on board for say a month in the Bahamas or will it feel cramped real quick? Looking for real world feedback to help with the decision. The 550/580 is nice but it's a different beast for a lot of reasons. I'm open to both but looking for feedback. Thanks!
No issues here do lots of 10 day stints in the Bahamas with adult kids. Yes sometimes you feel cramped but oh well you are in paradise just go outside. Love the boat and have spent a lot of time dialing it in to fit our needs while cruising

I own a 48da now, I really don't expect to get a different boat until I die. As far as time spent on it, the most with wife and I is 2 weeks (kids now past HS).

But growing up I spent 2+ weeks on a 24da traveling the great lakes a number of times, so I can't imagine a family of 4 couldn't spend weeks at a time on a 48! We did spend take week+ trips on a Tiara 40 with 3 kids... those were the best of times. Get a boat and get out there with the kids before they are gone!

We had a new 2005 260 Sundancer with 4 kids….. I never thought for a second it was too small….. kids don’t care….. now a days my wife says our boat is too small with another couple on board….. and still I don’t even think about it

The more the merrier….

Thanks. I'm in a 33 Grady now that we take to the Bahamas, etc. We are regular boaters but looking to trade out to go in a different direction and buy something we can stay on for extended periods. Just trying to narrow down the selection. Cheers!

how’d the survey go on that 540

The boat was really clean and I personally loved the layout. Had it not been for the pods, I would have bought it. I got all the service records and decided I didn’t want to deal with the pods. Just my personal preference.

"We usually have four people on the boat, and there is ample space to be comfortable for an unlimited amount of time. I've even accommodated six people and a baby, setting up the saloon as a sleeping quarter, which can make it a bit tight, but the fun and memories outweigh the snugness – LOL. I find the 48 to be a fantastic family boat. Another thing to keep in mind is that with this vessel, I haven't been limited in terms of where I can go, including marinas, coves, and other places. With a 54, you might need to do more research on access limitations. FYI, there are 54 models with shafts in the later models, I believe 2016 and newer."

If you are going to spend time on the hook more than camping in marinas you should really consider a bridge boat. There is simply so much more space and comfort and corners your wife can banish you to. I'm a qualified expert.

Hope everyone is well . The lower pull out portion of my salon couch no longer latch to stay in when not pulled out. Does anyone know where the latch is located to hold it in ?

Hello! Any chance you could Re-post this info, please? We just purchased a 2006 and would like to get everything changed out and start fresh. Thank you!

Will have to look honestly. Never thought there was a latch

I have not seen a latch on mine either however our couch is a little different as they changed it on the 2012 model, I know this because I almost bought a '12 when I was on the market a few years back...

I completed my 1,000-hour service, and let me tell you, it was a bit of a financial rollercoaster. The housing for both after-coolers were corroded, and since they don't offer just the housing separately, I had to spend on the complete set at $4,400 each. Adding to the drama, a brand-new turbo set me back $5,400.

As for the rest of the components, they were happily sailing along. However, the grand total for labor, which included the removal, sending the parts out to be serviced, and the reinstallation, was $15,000. Ouch! It felt like my wallet was on a deep-sea diving expedition :)

Yet, in the grand scheme of things, the pain might just be worth it. Once the boat is afloat again, Here's to hoping the waves of joy will wash away the memories of financial woes!

Interesting... I agree we need more light over the table area. I want to see it at night. I was thinking about 2 of those myself one on each side but when I played with a light like that when it was facing back it was too bright in your face. I feel they need to be more down lights on the back of the top. I was going to install a couple more of the Orbits back there next time I had the roof apart to get more more light at the very back of the roof line. But yes I will have to drill holes to make that happen.
One does the job I took these photos at night

Well that is bright.... I love your teak, wish my boat had that.

Do any of you guys change out the zincs on your engines yourselves? Obviously, the inboard zincs are easy. Any tricks or tips to getting to the outboard zincs? Special tool? Need to hit the gym? I just can't get those to budge. Getting old isn't for the faint of heart!
