600 HR Cummins Service

I just ran it. Temps were between 168 and 174 from 2100 to 2550 RPM. At WOT ~2550 RPM, I was going 27 knots for a good 5 min and never exceeded 174 on either engine. Dropping down to 2250 RPM brought my temps to 168 immediately. I am very pleased with the results after sitting at the dock for 6 months. It's been 3 years since the intercoolers were done. I just got a written quote from Cummins for intercooler service and valve lash adjustment, $654.40 on both engines. Obviously they haven't seen my engine compartment. This could be one of those situations that results in full heat exchanger, intercooler, transmission cooler service on both engines, going from $654.40 to $6544.00.

Addendum: I got a revised quote from Cummins and when they added the valve cover gaskets, intercooler O-rings, pipe O-rings, zincs, transportation fee, and adjusted the labor after talking to the tech, the new quote is $1,500. I'm in the ball park now.

I had the engine tech over today. He adjusted valve lash on my 800 hr engines. One had been done before when a head was replaced, the other was never cracked open. The one with the new head was nearly within speck. The other one needed a little more turns of the wrench, but was well within operational conditions. I could have deferred this service. Looking inside heads, they both looked like they just came out of the factory with a thin coat of new oil. Shining and clean.

The caps were pulled off the intercoolers. All tubes were open with a little horizontal salt crust line. After 3 years of no intercooler service the tech said to run it through the season and then at the end of the season, send them out to have them acid dipped. He said there is no sense in servicing the heat exchangers now, because they hardly ever have any problems with them. My PO posted in 2011 that they were clean. I replaced the Fleetcool ES Complete.

We rant them up to temp at 1300 RPM. I just replaced the transmission oil last week and did not run it. I noticed the starboard side shaft turned in neutral at about 60 RPM when I hit 1200 RPM. I throttled back to idle and then back up and it was not turning. That was weird.

I have an exhaust leak between one manifold and turbo, so the seal needs to be replaced. Other than that, I sleep well tonight.

When I had the valve lash and idle adjustment done, the Cummins mechanic told me the big air intake filter should be replaced every 1000 hours. I am just over 1000 hours and just cleaned mine. But never heard of this replacement interval. Any of you replaced yours for preventative maintenance?

Mechanic may be referring to the internal coalescer filter. http://walkerairsep.com/pdf/installation/WalkerCCEpicOVERVIEW2.pdf
I did mine at just shy of 700 hours and it was "ready" for replacement.

Walker says " clean the filter every 250 to 300 hours or once a year, replace the filter after 4 cleanings or every 3 to 4 years"
